Abstract
Irritant contact dermatitis is an inflammatory process locally on the skin that if contact with
substances that are irritants. In Indonesia, the prevalence of irritant contact dermatitis is highest
6.2%, the prevalence of dermatitis > 10% are found in Southeast Sulawesi Wakatobi district and
the city of Bau-Bau. This study aims to analyze the risk of irritant contact dermatitis in the village
of the district Waemputtang Bombana Southeast Sulawesi in 2017 by the contact process, exposure
to risk, safeguard yours elf, and drying temperature.
This study is an observational analytic approach namely case-control study. The population
is all the seaweed farmers in the village Waemputtang Bombana during the study. The number
sampling was taking total sampling case and control sampling is 1:2, all samples are 135 people
seaweed farmers obtained consisted of 45 cases and 90 controls. The Processing data using SPSS
16.0 program. Analysis data is to analyze the univariate and bivariate odds ratio significance.
The results obtained that the work time OR = 2.023 95% Cl. 0124-33105 is not a significant
risk factor, exposure to risk OR = 2.875 95% Cl. 1.36-6.076 a significant risk factor, efforts to
protect themselves OR 95% Cl = 1618. 0759-3450 is not a significant risk factor, where the drying
OR = 2184 95% Cl. 0716-6666 is not a significant risk factor for the incidence of contact dermatitis.
Working time ≥ 8 hours per day is a high risk than working time <8 hours per day. The
longer the working time of the contact frequency is also higher irritants that cause contact
dermatitis in seaweed farmers. Exposure to the risk of repeated contact with an increasingly long
time and come into contact with seaweed also lead to microtrauma or laceration disrupting the
epidermal defense which resulted in farmers vulnerable to irritants. Efforts to protect themselves
more at risk of not using than those using personal protective equipment, the use of personal
protective equipment that is not effectively causing irritant contact dermatitis. Drying on the
seafront is a high risk than the drying house or yard, due to the influence of ocean temperatures.
Working time, efforts to protect themselves, and where drying is not a significant risk factor
for irritant contact dermatitis. The exposure is the risk of a significant risk factor for irritant contact
dermatitis. To prevent contact dermatitis in seaweed farmers is to minimize direct contact with
seaweed, using personal protective equipment at work, prolonged contact with seagrass.
